Also called Noi Na in Thailand, sugar apple is a knobby fruit with soft, juicy, creamy white flesh that carries a sweet custardy flavour. Sugar apples have high levels of vitamins and minerals, notably Vitamin B9, Vitamin C, calcium and phosphorus. For pregnant woman, Vitamin B9 (folic acid) can help to prevent birth defects such as cleft palate and neural tube defect in the brain and spinal cord, and also promote the production of red blood cells. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that can reduce the inflammation of the airway and therefore help prevent asthma attack. High in calories, sugar apples are also great for those need gain weight in a healthy manner. The best and the easiest way to eat sugar apples is to split the fruit open, use a spoon to scoop out the pulps away from the hard skin, and enjoy the fleshy segments in the mouth while spitting the inedible shiny black seeds out.
